i got up at 6'O clock today...
i'm so tired. today was the annual AWANA olympics and so we had to get to church by 7am to pick up the kids. this year was the first time our Sparky team (kindergarten to 2nd grade) did not attend the olympics. it was a very sad situation. i mean the only reason why the Sparky team didn't have enough kids would be... the parents were busy with some other business during those years? i dunno. any how it was so sad. i heard that little (well, he's not so little) Conrad was really sad. i was sad too.
but i think the 2nd worst thing next to not even competing at all is to be disqualified. man, i've been coaching these games for 4 years now, but i think some of these rules are just too harsh. the ballon relay (which KCPC used to dominate) was so bad this year. the kids didn't know where to stand, who to give the ballons to, and on and on and on. i mean i gotta take the most of the blame though cuz i was out there on the floor as a "coach" and basically these kids were disqualified cuz they weren't coached well.
today is David So's birthday too. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVID! (he's my 3rd grade student) well, there was alot of drama we (daniel and i) had to deal with. david was one of our fastest runner and he was supposed to run this event, but he comes to us in the morning telling us that he couldn't run cuz he hurt his knee and ankle really bad. that meant switching around kids to fill in all the spots that he was supposed to run, which leads to hurt feelings and crying boys... i don't wanna get into it right now. well, anyways, about 5 mins before the games begin, daivd says, "look teacher sam, i can run!" and then sprints down the grass field and back.
aight, fast forward to about 30 mins into the olympics. things aren't going well for us as we had hoped, but we knew that david's sprint race was coming up, a sure win. as the whistle blew, david bolted out of the line, and like Tom Brady and his high ankle sprain in the super bowl, david's ankle looked perfectly fine. the race is 3 laps around the awana pins, and david was well in the lead by the 2nd lap. but i saw the most horrifying thing right in front of my eyes. as david flew by one of the pins, it started to move very slowly, and without a sound it hit the ground. heart break... the pain... the disapointment...
i feel really bad for the kids cuz they didn't even get a chance to "lay it all out on the court" as my coach used to say in high school. i think it's so cruel to allow kids to be disqualified. it's too much for them to handle. i mean it's not like these kids are taking drugs or anything (although some of these white kids looked like they did).
anyways, i'm really tired. gonna go to sleep. i don't know if i'm gonna be back at the AWANA olympics next year, but if i get to return once more, i promise we claim that medal.
i saw the fire in there eyes when i told them, "we'll be back next year and those medals will be ours!"

man, i shouldn't be teaching these kids that winning is everything... i mean, winning isn't everything, right? isn't image everything? cuz we looked good this year once again. dang, who designs those awesome awana shirts?????

arrrrgghh, i can't believe i got up so early today...
